Quick recap

November 1813, southern France. Marshal Soult holds Bayonne, and Wellington invades. Major Sharpe wants command of the Prince of Wales's Own Volunteers, but Wellington says he has no sway with Horse Guards. Lieutenant Colonel Sir Nathanial Peacock arrives to lead the 71st. Ordered to make a diversion, Sharpe hits the French rear and takes their guns, to Peacock's annoyance. He reunites with Joel Chase, now a rear admiral, and guards the naval party scouting sites for a pontoon bridge. At the Battle of the Nive, one bridge breaks, Soult attacks and Peacock runs. Sharpe holds the line until reinforcements arrive, and Peacock is sent home in disgrace. Jane leaves without a word, but she was only chaperoning a young Spanish noblewoman.
