Spoilers for this title

Quick recap

In Syrup Village, the crew meets Usopp, a habitual liar who cheers up Kaya, a rich, sickly girl. Her butler, Klahadore, is actually Captain Kuro, a pirate who faked his death and plans to kill Kaya for her fortune, backed by the hypnotist Jango and the Black Cat Pirates. Since nobody believes Usopp, he, three village kids, Luffy, Zoro and Nami hold off the attack on the slope. Luffy beats Kuro. Kaya gives the crew the Going Merry, and Usopp joins as sniper. The block closes with Gaimon, a man stuck in a treasure chest on an island of rare animals.

Hidden details

  1. ReferencePinocchio's nose

Usopp's long nose is a nod to Pinocchio, the puppet whose nose grows with every lie. Fitting for a kid who never stops making up stories.

  2. ReferenceWe've met Usopp's dad

Usopp talks about his pirate father, and Luffy ties the name to a sniper in Shanks' crew. In the anime he gets it right away; in the manga it dawns on him slowly.

  3. Behind the scenesGaimon got moved

In the manga, the run-in with Gaimon, the man in the treasure chest, comes before Syrup Village. The anime moved it later, with Usopp already aboard.
