Quick recap

Millionaire Jason Rafiel dies and leaves her £20,000 on one condition: she has to solve a case he doesn't even name. The clues put her on a coach tour of English houses and gardens. A fellow passenger, retired headmistress Elizabeth Temple, tells her about Verity Hunt, a former pupil engaged to Rafiel's son, Michael, who is in prison for her murder. Miss Temple is killed by a boulder rolled down a hill. Staying with the three Bradbury-Scott sisters, Miss Marple finds the truth: Clotilde killed Verity out of jealousy, buried her in the garden, and passed off another girl's body as Verity's to frame Michael. Michael is pardoned, and Miss Marple collects her inheritance.

What changed on screen

  1. ChangeAlmost a different story

ITV (2009) is very loose: Rafiel is just an old friend, with nothing from the Caribbean, and nearly everyone on the tour has a different name and backstory.

  2. ChangeClotilde in a habit

On ITV, Clotilde is a nun, Sister Clotilde, and nephew Raymond West comes along with Miss Marple. The director was Nicolas Winding Refn, of Drive.

  3. ChangeCocoa instead of milk

The ending still echoes the book: Clotilde tries to poison Miss Marple, this time with a cup of cocoa, and she doesn't drink it.

  4. Behind the scenesThe last one she wrote

It was the last Miss Marple novel Christie wrote. Sleeping Murder came out later, but it had been written decades earlier.
