Full story

Simon Williams is a Los Angeles actor scraping by on bit parts and dreaming of being taken seriously. He has a secret: ionic energy powers that give him superhuman strength and cause explosions when he loses control. In Hollywood that is a problem, because of the Doorman Clause, a rule that bans people with powers from working in film and TV. Simon hides everything and focuses on one dream: director Von Kovak is remaking Wonder Man, an old superhero movie, and Simon wants the lead.

Along the way he meets Trevor Slattery, the actor who once pretended to be the Mandarin. The two become friends, rehearse together, and Trevor starts coaching Simon. What Simon does not know is that Trevor has a deal with the Department of Damage Control. Agent P. Cleary sent him to get close to Simon and prove he has powers, in exchange for keeping Trevor out of prison.

One whole episode goes back in time to explain where the rule came from. DeMarr Davis was a nightclub doorman who gained the power to turn into a living portal. After saving people from a fire, he became a star alongside actor Josh Gad. On a film set, drunk, DeMarr lost focus and Gad got stuck inside the portal. That accident created the Doorman Clause.

Simon nails the audition and the callback with Kovak, and Trevor lands a part too, as the hero's best friend. Their friendship gets more and more genuine, and Trevor starts misleading Cleary to protect Simon. During the shoot, a newspaper interview exposes Trevor's deal with the government. Simon feels betrayed, loses control, and lets out an ionic blast that wrecks part of the set.

To save his friend, Trevor puts on his Mandarin costume and records a video taking the blame for the explosion. Cleary suspects the truth but goes along with it to protect his own career, and Trevor is locked up. Simon finishes the movie, which is a hit, and celebrates with his family. But he does not forget Trevor. In the end, Simon breaks into the Damage Control prison, blasts a hole in the ceiling, and escapes with his friend, revealing that he can now fly. What comes next is left open.
