Before the maze, before Thomas was Thomas, a boy arrives at WICKED with other children. The world is in ruins and the organization promises to find a cure. The boy is chosen for studies and given a new name. He meets Teresa, Newt and others who will later be part of the maze. Each step WICKED takes seems reasonable from the inside, but the price becomes clear. The book shows how the maze project was planned, how the children were chosen and how bonds formed among them. It ends at the point where the first book's story begins.
