Quick recap

Thirteen years before the maze, solar flares devastate the Earth. Mark and Trina, two teenagers, and the soldiers Alec and Lana escape New York and spend a year in a North Carolina town. Then aircraft arrive and fire a virus. Residents start to sicken and go mad. The group learns someone released the virus on purpose, and that an immune little girl is at the center of it. Mark and Alec follow the attackers' trail on a dangerous trip through cultists and enemies. The story shows where the Flare came from, and who decided that sacrificing so many was worth it.

The prequel is set 13 years before the first book and shows the start of the Flare virus. Wes Ball's films did not adapt it.

The leads are Mark and Trina, not Thomas and the Gladers. The link to the trilogy comes only through what the book reveals about WICKED and the virus.
