Quick recap
Julius Caesar comes home early from his quaestorship in Spain and starts climbing in Rome. He marries Pompeia, runs a lavish aedileship and, in 63 BC, narrowly wins the race for Pontifex Maximus. At home he leans on his mother Aurelia, a sensible adviser, and carries on a long affair with Servilia, Brutus's mother. In the Senate he takes on Cato and the boni, the conservatives. After his praetorship he divorces Pompeia. He governs Further Spain, where his troops hail him imperator, but Cato blocks his triumph. In 60 BC, Caesar strikes a deal with Crassus and Pompey and betroths his daughter Julia to Pompey. In the end, married to Calpurnia, he serves his first consulship and leaves to govern Gaul.
