Quick recap

Sulla returns from the East, wins the civil war and becomes dictator. His enemies go on proscription lists and are killed, and young Marius's head ends up on a pole. Sulla erases Marius's honors and floods Rome with laws that hand power back to the patricians. Pompey, a vain young general, insists on being called Magnus. Young Julius Caesar, freed from a priesthood he hated, racks up military and diplomatic wins far from Rome. His work done, Sulla shocks everyone by giving up power, retires and dies. Then come Pompey's war in Spain and the Spartacus revolt, crushed by Crassus, with thousands crucified along the Appian Way. The book closes with Pompey and Crassus on top and Caesar climbing the ladder of offices.
