England, 1327. Queen Isabella topples Edward II and crowns their son, Edward III. In Kingsbridge, Merthin is apprenticed to a builder, his brother Ralph wants to be a knight, and Caris learns healing from Mattie Wise. Sir Thomas Langley arrives at the priory asking to become a monk, carrying a secret that threatens the town. The bridge collapses, Mattie dies, and Caris's cousin Godwyn becomes prior and accuses her of witchcraft. Years later, Merthin returns from Florence, Ralph comes back a knight, and the plague arrives: the monks flee and Caris stays to tend the sick. In the final episode, Thomas reveals who he is and, with Caris, secures the charter that frees the town from the priory. Godwyn still wants her executed, and Edward marches against a peasant revolt.
