Messenger got the idea for the series in 2008, after years of trying other stories. Keeper was the first book she ever finished, and it went through about twenty drafts before it came out in October 2012.
source ↗Ella, the stuffed elephant Sophie takes to the elvin world, is a real toy. The author has had her since childhood and wrote her into the book.
source ↗An old photo shows Sophie next to a sand castle that looks exactly like the elves' tribunal site, a place she had never seen. It's the first sign that her mind holds things she can't explain.
source ↗In 2020 an Illustrated & Annotated Edition of the first book came out, with 16 illustrations, deleted scenes and the author's notes.
source ↗In 2021 Disney announced a film with Ben Affleck directing. In 2024 the rights moved to Warner Bros., with Messenger as executive producer. There's no release date yet.
source ↗Prentice, Tiergan's friend from the first book, was punished for hiding where Sophie was. Here his broken mind becomes a picture of what could happen to someone Sophie loves.
source ↗Grady blames the Black Swan for his daughter Jolie's death. Mr. Forkle swears the group had nothing to do with it. The question hangs in the air and comes back later.
source ↗The cover shows Sophie and Keefe standing in front of Silveny, the alicorn Sophie finds and trains in this book.
source ↗In the first book, Sophie finds a book on pyrokinesis with the Everblaze page marked while fires hit human cities. Here that fire stops being a clue and becomes a threat.
source ↗Keefe wears his family pin all the time. It carries aromark, the powder ogres use for tracking. Who put it there says a lot about his family.
source ↗The cover shows Fitz holding Sophie as they fall from a burning building. That moment, as drawn, never happens in the book.
source ↗At Exillium, the school for banished elves, Sophie meets the twins Tam and Linh Song. They arrive as side characters but grow into big players.
source ↗In the end, Mr. Forkle and Granite drop their disguises: they are Magnate Leto, Foxfire's principal, and Sir Tiergan, Sophie's telepathy mentor since book one.
source ↗The cover shows Sophie, Keefe and Biana in Ravagog, the ogre city, disguised in Neverseen cloaks and surrounded by water Linh is controlling.
source ↗Mr. Forkle showed up at the start of the series as the neighbor who scared off a kidnapper. Here he dies protecting Oralie and leaves Sophie one last piece of advice.
source ↗Keefe seals a door marked Nightfall with his own blood. At the end, Amy hears the kidnappers say the same name. It's the hook for the next book.
source ↗The cover shows Sophie, Fitz and Tam raiding a Neverseen hideout. Fitz and Tam are trapped in a force field, and the cloaked figure is thought to be Ruy.
source ↗Nightfall was the first book in the series to get a Barnes & Noble special edition. The hardcover runs 91 chapters.
source ↗The author's website has a bonus scene told by Keefe during his recovery, running alongside chapters 36 to 60 of this book.
source ↗On the cover, Sophie, Linh and Keefe hold hands above Atlantis. Sophie isn't wearing her gloves because she's enhancing Linh to hold back the water.
source ↗The book ends with Alvar waking up with no idea who he is. Hold on to that question: it matters later.
source ↗At 848 pages in hardcover, Flashback is the longest book in the series. The first one had 496.
source ↗The Barnes & Noble edition has a bonus chapter told by Fitz. The paperback added a scene from Keefe's point of view and a preview of Legacy.
source ↗Sophie registers for elvin matchmaking and gets labeled unmatchable, because nobody knows who her biological parents are. That comes back later.
source ↗On Instagram, Messenger shared titles that lost out to Legacy: Inception (same as a famous movie), Deadlock (sounded like someone dies) and Rematch (not exciting enough).
source ↗The first edition included a short story told by Tam, and the Barnes & Noble edition added a bonus Tam chapter.
source ↗Since book one nobody has known who Sophie's biological parents are. Here she learns Oralie is her mother and can't tell anyone.
source ↗Lady Gisela mentions "stellarlune," and Oralie ties the word to a secret she erased from her own memory. Note the name.
source ↗Unlocked combines a world guide written as Council files, recipes, a map and a pronunciation guide with a novella that moves the story forward.
source ↗It's the first cover with Sophie as the only elf. She looks younger than on the previous covers, which the author said stands for her whole journey.
source ↗The Unlocked paperback includes a short story told by Linh.
source ↗Grady catches Keefe running away, lets him go and hands him an Imparter for emergencies. Remember that.
source ↗Three years passed between Legacy (2019) and Stellarlune (2022), with Unlocked in between. The title wasn't revealed until January 2022.
source ↗Sophie, Maruca and Marella are on the cover. Messenger said she wanted a "Girl Power" cover and that the scene is a moment she'd been building toward since the series began.
source ↗In a bonus scene, Fintan offers Marella the truth about her mother's "accident" in exchange for her help. She keeps it to herself.
source ↗Unraveled is told entirely by Keefe. That's why he's on the cover, the author says.
source ↗The book starts from the note Keefe leaves Sophie at the end of Unlocked and shows what he did in the Forbidden Cities while his friends investigated Stellarlune.
source ↗The November 2025 paperback includes a sneak peek of Book 10, and its first printing has sprayed edges with a design by the author.
source ↗Book 10 is called Elysian and is scheduled for 2027, with no date yet. The author is contracted through it but won't promise it's the last.
source ↗Locked. These details give away parts of the title. Mark it as seen to unlock.
