Twelve-year-old Dre Parker and his widowed mother Sherry move from Detroit to Beijing for her job. Dre falls for violinist Meiying, but Cheng, a kung fu prodigy at school, hounds and beats him. The building's handyman, Mr. Han, saves him and reveals himself as a kung fu master. Han trains him with everyday lessons, like taking off and hanging up his jacket, and takes him to a temple. Dre learns Han carries the pain of losing his family. At the tournament, even injured, he reaches the final and beats Cheng. The students of the cruel teacher Li bow to Han.
