Quick recap

On his way to Virginia, Reacher stops at a fading motel in rural Nebraska and overhears a drunk doctor refuse to attend a woman, Eleanor, whose husband, Seth Duncan, beats her. Reacher persuades the doctor to treat her and breaks Seth's nose. The Duncans, a powerful family that runs a trucking company and extorts farms in the region, send enforcers, ex-college football linemen, to collect. Reacher fights back, is thrown out of the motel and stays in town. He meets Dorothy Coe, a part-time maid at the motel, who tells him more about the Duncans.
