After spending the night with Michelle Chang, Reacher is traveling through Wisconsin when he stops at a pawnshop selling a 2005 West Point class ring. He won't accept that anyone would give that up willingly and stays in town to investigate. He learns the ring was sold by a biker, Jimmy Rat, and earlier passed through a fence, Arthur Scorpio, of Rapid City, South Dakota. There he meets Detective Gloria Nakamura, who has failed to pin anything on Scorpio, and an investigator looking for a missing woman: Serena Rose Sanderson.
