Quick recap

Reacher arrives at a small Midwestern town called Mother's Rest, curious about the origin of its name. Nobody explains it. There he meets Michelle Chang, a former FBI agent turned private investigator looking for her colleague Keever. The locals' aloofness raises Reacher's suspicions, and he decides to stay and help. In Keever's motel room he finds a crumpled note with the name Maloney and a phone number belonging to a Los Angeles Times journalist. The search sets them against hostile locals, and they follow every lead.
