Quick recap

March 1997, six months before Killing Floor. Major Jack Reacher is briefed by Colonel Leon Garber on a quiet job in Mississippi: a woman has been found murdered, and Captain Reed Riley, from a nearby Ranger base, is a suspect. Another investigator, Major Duncan Munro, handles the official case. Reacher's job is to go undercover and make sure the investigation doesn't hurt the Army's image, which fears the suspect's father, a senator. He settles in a motel, meets Sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux, who soon works out who he is, and investigates anyway.
