In Lyra's world, every person's soul walks beside them as an animal called a daemon. Lyra Belacqua, raised at Jordan College, is given the alethiometer and goes after her friend Roger, taken by a gang that kidnaps children. She learns Mrs. Coulter runs it all and is her mother, then heads North with the Gyptians, aeronaut Lee Scoresby and the bear Iorek Byrnison. At Bolvangar, she saves the children from a machine that cuts them from their daemons. On Svalbard, she helps Iorek defeat Iofur. Her father, Lord Asriel, uses Roger to open a bridge to another world, and the boy dies. Lyra follows him across.

ChangeThe movie stops short
The movie ends before the book's last three chapters. Asriel's bridge and Roger's fate were saved for a sequel that never came. The HBO series films all of it at the end of S1.
In the movie, the bear king Iofur Raknison is renamed Ragnar Sturlusson so he isn't confused with Iorek. The order changes too: Lyra reaches Svalbard before Bolvangar.
In the book, the boy found without his daemon in a northern village is Tony Makarios, and Billy Costa escapes Bolvangar. The series folds both into Billy, who gets Tony's daemon, Ratter.
The book never leaves Lyra and her world. The series already shows a boy from our world, Will Parry, in S1, though in print he doesn't appear until the next volume.
No spoilersThe easter eggs give away parts of the title. They open once you mark it as seen.
