Quick recap

Lee Scoresby is 24, with a balloon he won at poker and his hare daemon, Hester. He lands in Novy Odense, an Arctic port, and gets tangled up in a mayoral election, a fight over the armored bears and a Dutch captain's stranded cargo. Behind it all are the tycoon Larsen Manganese and the candidate Ivan Poliakov. Among their hired guns is Pierre McConville, an old enemy of Lee's. The town distrusts the bears, and Lee befriends one of them, Iorek Byrnison. The two shoot it out with the hired guns and escape together by balloon, with Hester, at the start of a long partnership.
