Quick recap

Miss Lemon, Poirot's flawless secretary, makes three mistakes in one letter. The reason: her sister, Mrs Hubbard, who runs a student hostel on Hickory Road in London, is upset about odd thefts. A light bulb, a stethoscope, boracic powder and a shoe go missing, and a rucksack is slashed. Poirot visits and advises calling the police. Soon after, student Celia Austin confesses to some of the thefts and dies of poison the next night. More deaths follow, including the owner's. Poirot finds the hostel was a base for smuggling and that the killer is student Nigel Chapman, who murdered to protect the racket and an old secret.
