Quick recap

At Winterfell, the Starks host King Robert Baratheon, who brings news that Jon Arryn, Hand of the King, is dead, and asks Ned to take the job. During the visit, young Bran climbs a tower, stumbles on a Lannister secret and is pushed. Ned leaves for King's Landing with his daughters while Jon Snow heads for the Wall. Across the sea, Viserys Targaryen trades his sister Daenerys in marriage to Khal Drogo for an army. The volume ends with the Starks scattered across the realm and Ned starting to see that the capital is far more dangerous than the North.
