Quick recap

Ayla and Jondalar head west along the Great Mother River, the Danube, from Mamutoi land to his home near present-day Les Eyzies, France. Along the way Ayla meets many peoples, and the way each one sees the world drives the story. When they reach the Sharamudoi, whom Jondalar and his brother met on the way out, leaving is hard. A high-ranking couple offers them a four-way marriage. Jondalar says no: he wants his people's leading shaman to seek out his dead brother's spirit and help it cross over. In the end the two reach the Zelandonii. Ayla is pregnant, and so is the mare Whinney.
