Quick recap

Ayla and Jondalar settle into the Lion Camp of the Mamutoi, a people who rely on the mammoth for food, shelter, tools and faith. Old Mamut, the eldest shaman, sees Ayla's gift with horses and wolves and opens the Mamuti mysteries to her. She teaches the camp the Clan's sign language, including Rydag, a frail half-Clan boy whom Jondalar learns to accept. The conflict is a love triangle: Ranec, a carver in the camp, falls for Ayla, and she comes close to mating with him. Last-minute revelations bring Ayla and Jondalar back together. In the end the two set out on a year-long trip to the Zelandonii, his people.
