Quick recap

Jondalar comes home to the Ninth Cave of the Zelandonii, in the Vézère valley, and brings Ayla. Her past with the Clan, whom the Zelandonii call flatheads, frightens many. People with Clan blood react in opposite ways: Echozar takes comfort in Ayla's story, while Brukeval rejects his own roots. The First, the spiritual leader Zelandoni, backs Ayla so the whole cave will accept her as a healer. Ayla shames the mothers into nursing a neglected baby and discovers the cave of Lascaux. She and Jondalar are joined at the summer ceremony, and their daughter, Jonayla, is born. Then Ayla decides to become the Zelandoni's acolyte.
