Stu Price

The dentist who loses control

Stu is a by-the-book dentist who lives under his girlfriend's rules and always wakes up in the worst spot of the group. Ed Helms plays him in all three films.

The Hangover

The dentist missing a tooth

Stu goes to Las Vegas with a controlling girlfriend, Melissa, waiting back home. He wakes up missing a tooth and learns he married Jade, a call girl he met at the chapel. The song he improvises at the piano in the suite becomes one of the film's best remembered scenes. It's Stu who works out where Doug is, when he hears that someone on a sedative ends up on the floor, not the roof. At the reception he breaks up with Melissa. Even without knowing where Doug is, Stu is the one who thinks hardest about the consequences. In the end he sets a date with Jade for the following week and ends the wedding night free of Melissa. When the photos come up at the end, Stu is among those who agree to look before deleting them.

The Hangover Part II

The wedding he wanted perfect

Two years later, Stu is engaged to Lauren and refuses any bachelor party. He has just one, at a pancake restaurant, with Phil and Doug. In Bangkok he wakes up with a face tattoo and without Teddy, the bride's brother. He pieces together what happened with Phil and Alan, and arrives at the wedding with a speech: the bride's father, Fong, thought he was soft, and Stu insists he isn't. When the group finds out Chow is alive and that a gangster wants his bank password in exchange for Teddy, Stu is the one who connects the dots during a blackout and works out where the kid is. To make it in time he takes Chow's speedboat and gets to the wedding at the last minute.

The Hangover Part III

The dentist who traps Chow

In the third film, Stu is the one chasing Chow. When Chow escapes Caesars Palace by parachute, Stu catches him in the street and locks him in the limo trunk. Along the way he uses Jade, his Las Vegas ex, as a contact. It becomes clear Stu is the only one of the trio who still wants a normal life, and also the one who keeps getting dragged into trouble. Before that, Stu and Phil wait for Chow in Tijuana to sedate him, but Alan gives away their hiding spot by accident. Chow tricks all three and locks them in a basement. In Las Vegas, Phil's phone signal leads to a pawn shop and then to Jade, who says where Chow is holed up.

Off screen

In comics and books

Stu's piano song was improvised. There was a piano in the suite, Todd Phillips let Ed Helms build the scene on the spot, and Helms said he had to be tutored on how to play.
