The birth
Evelyn lives with Lee and the kids on a New York farm. After the death of her youngest, Beau, she is pregnant again, a risky choice in a world where a cry can be fatal. When labor starts, she is home alone. In the basement she steps on a nail, drops a picture frame and draws a creature into the house.
She switches on the red warning lights and lures the creature away with a kitchen timer, holding back the pain without a sound. Lee and the kids arrive, the baby is born and everyone hides in a shelter in the barn. Marcus and Lee set off fireworks away from the house to lure the creature, the agreed signal so Evelyn can give birth. When the shelter floods and the creature shows up, Evelyn uses the falling water to mask the newborn's sound. The film ends with her shotgun raised.
