Ed Warren

The demonologist who never drops a case

Ed is a demonologist who isn't a priest but works alongside the Church. Practical and protective, he handles the technical side of the investigations and Lorraine's safety. He also keeps the artifact room, where the cursed objects from their cases end up.

The Conjuring

The exorcism that couldn't wait

On the Perron case, Ed sets up cameras and recorders to gather evidence and ask the Church for an exorcism. The evidence is lost and approval doesn't come in time.

When Bathsheba possesses Carolyn, Ed performs the exorcism himself, even though he isn't a priest. It works, and Carolyn comes back. The house's music box goes into the artifact room with the other objects from their cases.

Annabelle Comes Home

The doll comes home

After the nurses' case, Ed and Lorraine drive the Annabelle doll home. On the way, it draws spirits: the car dies near a cemetery and Ed is nearly run over.

At home, Ed has a priest bless a glass case and locks the doll inside, with a sign telling everyone not to open it. Years later, while the couple is away on a case, the case gets opened.

Elvis in Enfield

In London, Ed wins over the Hodgsons with his guitar, singing Elvis for the kids. He's also the one who stays to save Janet by the window when the demon tries to kill her.

Lorraine's vision showed Ed dying. On the train back, Ed replays the Bill recording and realizes the old man isn't acting alone. He barely escapes.

Heart and curse

During David Glatzel's exorcism, Ed has a heart attack. Once he's back, he helps defend Arne in court with the possession argument.

At the end, the Occultist takes over Ed's mind and turns him on Lorraine. He fights it, comes back and smashes the altar holding the curse together.

Time to stop

In 1986, with a weak heart, Ed is teaching and getting ready to retire. He's also trying to accept Tony, Judy's boyfriend.

The Smurl case pulls him back into the field one last time, with Lorraine and their daughter. He doesn't trust Tony at first, but the young man stands by the family when it counts. Afterward, Ed walks Judy down the aisle.

In comics and books

Ed Warren (1926–2006) was a real person. A US Navy veteran of World War II, he called himself a demonologist and, with Lorraine, worked cases like Amityville, Enfield and Arne Johnson's. Patrick Wilson plays him in every film.
