Dr. Robotnik is a vain, brilliant scientist who wants to use Sonic's power in his machines. Jim Carrey plays him in all three films, and also grandfather Gerald in the third. In the games he is also known as Eggman.
The Department of Defense calls Robotnik in to find the cause of the blackout. After seeing Sonic's footprint, he becomes obsessed with capturing him and uses a quill as a power source. Beaten, he is sent to the mushroom planet but swears to return.
Robotnik escapes the mushroom planet and allies with Knuckles to take the Master Emerald. After betraying him, he uses its power to build a giant robot. He falls with the robot when Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds.
In the third film, Ivo meets his grandfather Gerald, who runs the Eclipse Cannon. Learning that his grandfather wants to destroy Earth and themselves, Ivo has a change of heart, calls Stone his only friend and helps steer the cannon away.
Robotnik has been the villain of Sega's games since 1991. In the films, Jim Carrey said he would only return for a script written in gold, and the director printed one in 24-carat ink.
