In the 1990 miniseries

In the 1990 version, Bill is the brother who makes Georgie's boat in 1960. He leads the Losers into the sewer and wounds It with the imagination trick. Thirty years later, Mike calls, and Bill returns to Derry. His wife, Audra, is captured by the creature and hypnotized by the deadlights. In the lair, the group sees that It's true form is a giant spider. Eddie dies in the fight, but the Losers rip out and crush the creature's heart. Bill saves Audra and leaves Derry.

The paper boat

Bill makes a paper boat for Georgie and lets him go out alone in the rain. The boy vanishes down a storm drain. Bill carries the guilt all summer and believes his brother could be alive. He gathers Richie, Eddie and Stan and, with Ben, Beverly and Mike, forms the Losers. The clue is Derry: children have been disappearing for centuries.

He finds the sewer map, leads the group to the house on Neibolt Street and faces Pennywise, who poses as Georgie. In the end Bill sees through the trick, and his friends save him. All that remains is his brother's raincoat.

The writer

Twenty-seven years later, Bill is a successful writer. Mike calls, and he returns to Derry. In Chapter Two, the ritual needs an object from his past: Georgie's paper boat. Bill recovers it and meets a boy, Dean, whom he warns to leave town.

At the ritual, Bill tries to carry the guilt alone. His friends talk him out of facing It on his own. He only wins once he lets go of the guilt over his brother's death. Afterwards, he starts writing a new story.
