Benoit Blanc

The Southern detective who solves it all

Benoit Blanc is a private detective from the American South, with a drawl and a precise mind. Daniel Craig plays him in all three films. Each case has a new cast, and only he returns.

Knives Out

An anonymous case

Someone hires Blanc without saying who. He arrives at the Thrombey house after Harlan's death and hears the police call it suicide. Blanc has doubts and questions everyone. He learns the nurse Marta can't lie without getting sick and starts using her as a guide. When Marta inherits everything, he shields her from the Thrombeys and puts the pieces together: grandson Ransom swapped Harlan's medicines, tried to frame Marta and killed Fran to hide the crime. Blanc catches Ransom with Marta's help.

The drop of blood

At the end of the first case, Blanc tells Marta he suspected her early because of a drop of blood on her shoe. He says she prevailed because she made ethical choices that blocked Ransom's plans. It's his way of saying truth and decency sometimes go together.

The uninvited guest

Blanc arrives at Miles Bron's Greek island thinking he was invited, but the billionaire says someone must have played a joke. Blanc solves the murder-mystery game in an instant and privately warns Miles that every friend has a motive to kill him. In fact, he had been hired by Helen, twin sister of Andi, who died a week earlier. Blanc brings Helen to the party posing as her sister. He finds that Miles killed Andi and Duke and shot Helen, but he has no proof.

The napkin

Blanc has Helen pose as her sister on the island to search for the original napkin, where Andi sketched out Alpha's plan. Miles burns the napkin, and his friends refuse to testify against him. Blanc tells Helen he has done all he can and steps outside. Helen smashes Miles's glass sculptures, lights a bonfire and throws a piece of Klear into it. The explosion destroys the mansion and the Mona Lisa.

The detective and the priest

Blanc arrives at an upstate New York church to investigate Monsignor Wicks's death. He persuades Father Jud, the prime suspect, to help him, and the two question the parishioners. Blanc gathers the police and the parish to hear Jud's confession, but explains that Nat Sharp killed Wicks. Then he suddenly says he can't explain the rest. Inspired by Jud's faith, he lets the real culprit come forward on her own.
