Benji Dunn

Benji works behind the scenes at the IMF when Ethan comes back to active duty. After the failed rescue of Lindsey Farris in Berlin, he's the one who pulls the data from the recovered laptops showing that Owen Davian will be at the Vatican.

When the hunt starts to revolve around the mysterious Rabbit's Foot, Benji throws out theories about what it could be, up to a doomsday weapon. He helps Ethan from a distance in the race to Shanghai to save Julia, but he's still stuck at his desk.

Benji passes his field agent exam and debuts on a big mission: he and Jane Carter break Ethan out of a Moscow prison. Next, the three of them sneak into the Kremlin in disguise, and a bomb tears through the building. Under Ghost Protocol, the IMF is shut down and the team is on its own.

Benji becomes the group's field tech, alongside Ethan, Jane and Brandt. He runs the gear for the Burj Khalifa climb in Dubai and stays with the team all the way to Mumbai, where the missile aimed at San Francisco is stopped at the last second.

With the IMF dissolved, Benji ends up in the CIA's cyber operations division. Six months later, he gets tickets to the opera in Vienna: it's how Ethan, now a fugitive, reaches out. The two try to stop the assassination of Austria's chancellor and follow Ilsa Faust to Casablanca, where the team steals the Syndicate's file.

In London, Solomon Lane's men kidnap Benji. Lane straps a bomb to his chest and uses him to blackmail Ethan. In the final showdown, Ethan offers his own life in exchange, Benji is released, and Lane ends up locked in a glass cell.

Benji is with Ethan and Luther in Berlin when the plutonium cores are lost, and he stays with them on the hunt for the Apostles, from Paris to London.

In Kashmir, Benji runs into Solomon Lane himself. Lane tries to hang him, and Ilsa arrives in time to save him. The two of them subdue Lane and defuse the second bomb while Luther and Julia handle the first.

At Abu Dhabi airport, Benji has to defuse a bomb that only stops with the right answer to a riddle, while Ethan chases the Entity's key.

In Venice, the Entity hacks the team's comms and imitates Benji's voice to steer Ethan off course, which leads Ethan into a fight with Paris. It's the first time the enemy turns the voice of someone he trusts against him. After the Orient Express disaster, Ethan escapes with the key and meets up with Benji to keep the mission going.

Benji goes with Ethan to visit an ailing Luther at his London lab. Then he travels with Grace, Paris and Degas to St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea, looking for William Donloe, the only man who knows where the Sevastopol went down. The four of them fight off Russian special forces so Donloe can send Ethan the coordinates.

At the bunker in South Africa, Benji is shot in the firefight with Gabriel's and Kittridge's men. Wounded, he keeps working with Grace and Paris to prepare the system that will trap the Entity, and holds on to the end. After the mission, the team meets one last time in Trafalgar Square.

Simon Pegg has played Benji since Mission: Impossible III and auditioned back when Joe Carnahan was set to direct. For years the story went that Ricky Gervais had been cast as Benji; Pegg denied it, saying Gervais was meant to play a different character. With each film, Benji got a bigger role, from the lab to the heart of the team.
