Rita Mora Castro is a gifted lawyer in Mexico City, but she spends her days writing defenses for a firm that never gives her credit. Sick of watching guilty men walk free thanks to her work, she has just won another case when a mysterious call comes in with a very lucrative offer.
The client is Manitas Del Monte, a feared cartel boss. He wants out of crime and, in secret, to undergo the gender-affirming surgery he has wanted for years, so he can finally live as a woman. Rita has to find the right surgeon abroad and set everything up without anyone catching on.
The plan includes faking Manitas's death and sending his wife, Jessi, and their kids far away to Switzerland. That is how Emilia Pérez is born. Years later, Rita and Emilia cross paths again, and the past comes knocking. It all plays out as a musical, with songs woven into the story.
Loosely adapted from Jacques Audiard's own opera libretto, which drew on a chapter of Boris Razon's 2018 novel Écoute
