László Tóth is a Hungarian-Jewish architect who survived the Holocaust. Trained at the Bauhaus, he had a name in Europe before the war. In 1947 he arrives alone in the United States, leaving behind his wife, Erzsébet, and his niece, Zsófia, who still cannot leave the continent.
In Philadelphia, László moves in with his cousin Attila, who runs a furniture store, and starts from scratch. The two take a renovation job for a wealthy client, and László designs a modern library unlike anything else around. The work is not well received at first, the payment never comes, and Attila blames his cousin and throws him out.
Broke and far from his family, László gets by on odd jobs. Then the millionaire Harrison Lee Van Buren comes back into his life with a grand proposal that could change everything. The film follows decades in this immigrant's life, caught between the American dream and the price it demands.
