Biography

Robert Jackson Bennett was born on June 22, 1984, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He studied at the University of Texas and graduated with honors in English in 2005. After college he moved to Austin.

He debuted in 2010 with Mr. Shivers, a dark novel set during the Great Depression. It won the Shirley Jackson Award, which honors horror and psychological suspense, and the next year he took the British Fantasy Award for best newcomer. The Company Man (2011) blended crime and science fiction in an alternate industrial city and won the Edgar for Best Paperback Original, a mystery prize. In 2013, American Elsewhere, about a small New Mexico town that doesn't show up on maps, earned him a second Shirley Jackson.

That early run already shows his signature: he won't stay inside one genre. Each book borrows whatever the story needs from horror, mystery or fantasy.

Fantasy took the lead in 2014 with City of Stairs, the first book of The Divine Cities. The hook is strong: in a world where an empire's gods have been killed, a spy investigates a murder in their old holy city. City of Blades and City of Miracles finished the series. In 2018 came Foundryside, which opened the Founders trilogy with a thief in a city that runs on objects enchanted by magical inscriptions. Shorefall and Locklands closed it out. Along the way he also released the novella Vigilance (2019), a satire about gun violence in America.

In 2024 he launched the Shadow of the Leviathan series with The Tainted Cup. It's a classic-style mystery with an eccentric investigator and her young assistant, set inside a walled empire that lives under threat from giant creatures out of the sea. The book won both the Hugo and the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2025. A Drop of Corruption (2025) and A Trade of Blood (2026) carried the series forward.

For newcomers, The Tainted Cup is the easiest way in: read it as a detective novel and let the world reveal itself as you go.
