Quick recap

Heading home on a packet ship, Jack and Stephen learn that the War of 1812 with the United States has begun. A fire destroys the ship off Brazil, and the survivors spend weeks in the boats until HMS Java picks them up on Christmas Eve 1812. Days later, Java is beaten by USS Constitution. Jack, wounded in the arm, is taken to Boston as a prisoner along with Stephen. Stephen kills a French agent and plans to marry Diana to get her out. Jack escapes in a fishing boat to HMS Shannon. On June 1, 1813, Shannon beats Chesapeake in about fifteen minutes, with Jack fighting with his arm in a bandage.
