Quick recap

In 1450 Tuscany, Vittorio di Raniari is a nobleman's son. One night, vampires from a nearby castle slaughter his family. Vittorio lives only because Ursula, one of the vampires, is taken with him. He swears revenge and finds out he can see angels and the souls of the dying. With the angels' help, he storms the vampire court and destroys almost all of them, but spares Ursula. That choice costs him: she turns him, and Vittorio becomes what he hunted. Centuries later, he writes it all down in a castle in northern Tuscany.
