Quick recap

The crew of the starship Snark wakes early because of a signal from an unknown planetoid. Going down, they find an abandoned alien ship and, beyond it, a pyramid full of eggs. A creature latches onto one crewman's face and, back aboard, apparent relief turns into a nightmare when something bursts from his chest. From there, the creature grows in the ducts and hunts the crew one by one while Captain Standard and Executive Officer Roby try to keep order. It's the same backbone as the film, with different characters and details. The volume ends with a single crew member left alive after a final showdown with the creature.

Trivia

  1. Behind the scenesStar Beast

Dan O'Bannon's script was called Star Beast, and Fox bought it in 1976, three years before Alien opened.

  2. ReferenceNo Ripley

There's no Ripley: the crew includes Captain Chaz Standard and Executive Officer Martin Roby, and the lone survivor is a man. The ship is the Snark, not the Nostromo.

  3. Behind the scenesA “unisex” crew

O'Bannon noted in the script that the crew was unisex and any role could be played by a man or a woman, the idea that opened the door to Ripley in the film.
