Quick recap

Bond helps Soviet General Georgi Koskov defect in Bratislava and, instead of killing the sniper aiming at Koskov, only shoots the rifle out of her hands: he can tell she's an amateur. Koskov claims the new KGB chief, Pushkin, has revived the Death to Spies program, and then he's snatched back. Bond grows suspicious and tracks down the sniper, cellist Kara Milovy, Koskov's girlfriend. In Vienna and Tangier he learns the defection was staged: Koskov and arms dealer Brad Whitaker are using Soviet money to buy opium in Afghanistan. There Bond and Kara join Kamran Shah's mujahideen, destroy the shipment and escape by plane. Bond kills Whitaker, Pushkin arrests Koskov, and Kara plays again, with Bond in the audience.
