It's the first Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles book, with a new family and a new setting. In Florida, Nick Vargas gets a stepsister, Laurie, who believes in faeries. Nick thinks it's all nonsense until the two of them find Taloa, a nixie searching for her missing sisters. They decide to help. The catch is that the nixies' singing draws giants to the sea. To get the giants out, the kids use a recording of a mermaid's song. The plan works, and Nick starts seeing the world around him differently.
