Quick recap

Birthday gathers three short stories: "Coffin in the Sky", "Lemon Heart" and "Happy Birthday". They orbit Sadako Yamamura and characters readers know from the trilogy. One follows Mai Takano, Ryuji's former assistant, at a moment when she is alone and hurt. Another goes back years to the theater where Sadako tried to be an actress. The third closes the collection. They are shorter and more intimate than the novels, and best read after the trilogy. First published in Japan in 1999, as the fourth book of the series.
