Quick recap

The book goes back to the outbreak with new survivors, like the driver Danny and siblings April and Tim, and follows Lawrence Grey, a former Project Noah janitor, and Lila Kyle, Wolgast's ex-wife. The trail leads to Iowa, where Horace Guilder rules a prison city and keeps Grey chained up for his blood. Sara, whom everyone thought dead, is held there and learns her daughter was handed to Lila. Amy and her friends join the resistance. At the public execution, Wolgast, now a viral, sets off a bomb that kills the Twelve gathered there and himself. Amy turns viral and leaves. Only Carter and Zero remain.
