Quick recap

After years alone on prehistoric Earth, Arthur reunites with Ford, and the two ride a sofa through space-time to Lord's Cricket Ground, shortly before Earth is destroyed. White robots steal the Ashes, and Slartibartfast asks for help: the people of Krikkit, a planet hidden inside a dust cloud, once tried to wipe out the universe and were locked away outside time, and the robots are collecting the pieces of the key. Along the way, Arthur learns to fly and escapes Agrajag, a creature he has accidentally killed over several lifetimes. Trillian works out that Krikkit was manipulated by Hactar, a supercomputer. At Lord's, Arthur stops the final bomb.

What changed on screen

  1. Behind the scenesIt started as Doctor Who

Adams first wrote the plot as a Tom Baker Doctor Who story, Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen. The BBC turned it down, and the idea was then lined up for a second season of the TV series that never happened.

  2. Behind the scenesCensored in the US

It's the only book in the series censored in its US edition. Some swear words became made-up ones, like "swut."
