In Urithiru, Dalinar tries to unite the nations against the parshmen, awakened by the Everstorm, while flashbacks reveal his brutal past and the death of his wife, Evi, in a fire he caused. Kaladin, Shallan and Adolin go to Kholinar, but the capital falls: Moash kills King Elhokar and the group escapes through Shadesmar. At the battle of Thaylen City, Odium pushes Dalinar to give in to his guilt. Dalinar owns what he did, swears his Bondsmith oath and drives Odium back. Kaladin defeats Amaram. Taravangian is exposed as a traitor to the coalition. Jasnah becomes queen of Alethkar, and Shallan chooses Adolin and marries him.

    Early titles were Stones Unhallowed, then Skybreaker, with the focus on Szeth. The plan changed and the book became Dalinar's.

    The first draft ran 461,000 words and the third hit 514,000. The final version was cut to about 450,000. Tor had to switch printers and binderies to handle the size.
