Quick recap

In 3001, a comet-hunting tug finds Frank Poole, the astronaut HAL killed, frozen out past Neptune. He's revived into a new Earth, with space elevators ringing the equator. Poole visits Europa and meets Bowman and HAL merged into one being, Halman. Halman warns that the monolith has sent a report on humanity, and the reply could be an order to wipe it out. The humans decide to infect the monolith with a computer virus, using Halman as a Trojan horse. The monoliths start their attack but fall apart from the virus. Halman is stored in a sealed vault on the Moon. The makers' next answer shouldn't arrive for about 900 years, and humans land peacefully on Europa.
