Quick recap

1820. Doña Louisa Vivar asks Sharpe to find her husband, Don Blas Vivar, who vanished while serving as captain-general of Chile. Sharpe and Harper sail with Colonel Ruiz, and on Saint Helena Napoleon gives Sharpe a portrait for an admirer in Chile. In Valdivia their bags are stolen and the portrait disappears. Jailed and accused of spying over a coded message hidden in the portrait, they see their ship taken by Lord Cochrane's rebels. Cochrane admits he seized Blas Vivar by mistake and plans to rescue Napoleon and build a new empire in the New World. He frees Vivar but keeps the three cut off until the rescue ship sails. Back on Saint Helena, they learn Napoleon has died.
