Will and Maddie are in Toscana on a diplomatic mission when word comes of a cavalry force that has crossed the northern border and is raiding the countryside. The emperor sends the two Rangers to investigate. The invaders are Temujai, the steppe people Araluen has fought before, on a scouting mission to find a weak point for an invasion. Will and Maddie split up to gather allies and information and push the enemy back. When the Temujai advance and attack the Toscan forces, it falls to the two of them to lead their allies. And they have to do it with one of their greatest enemies in the way, threatening everything.
