A filler arc that jumps back to before Naruto returns to the village. Tsunade sets up a joint Chūnin Exam with the Sand, and Naruto's friends go through three stages: a written test, desert survival and one-on-one fights. Teams from other villages compete too, among them Fū, the Seven-Tails jinchūriki. Akatsuki's Hidan and Kakuzu crash the exam and capture Fū. Gaara calls off the third stage, and several participants still get promoted. Naruto doesn't appear: the focus is on his friends, showing how they grew while he trained away from the village.
