Full story
Two years after Sokovia, Thor is a prisoner of the fire demon Surtur, who tells him Odin has left Asgard and Ragnarok is coming: once Surtur's crown meets the Eternal Flame in Odin's vault, Asgard will fall. Thor breaks free, beats Surtur, takes the crown and thinks he has stopped the end of the world.
Back in Asgard, Heimdall is gone and "Odin" is Loki in disguise. Thor drags his brother to Earth and, with Doctor Strange's help, finds their father in Norway. Odin is dying. He warns them that his death will free Hela, his firstborn, a sister Thor and Loki never knew about. She once led Asgard's armies, and Odin locked her away when her ambition got out of hand. Odin dies, Hela shows up and crushes Mjolnir with one hand. As the brothers flee through the Bifrost, she knocks them out into space.
Hela takes Asgard, kills the Warriors Three, raises her old army and the giant wolf Fenris, and makes Skurge her executioner. Heimdall, in hiding, steals the sword that controls the Bifrost and shelters the people. Thor crash-lands on Sakaar, a junkyard planet ringed by wormholes. A scavenger called Scrapper 142 captures him and sells him to the Grandmaster, who runs the place and has already taken a liking to Loki. Thor realizes she is a Valkyrie, one of the warriors Hela slaughtered long ago.
The Grandmaster throws Thor into the arena against his champion: the Hulk, who has been on Sakaar for two years. Thor calls down lightning and is winning when the Grandmaster cheats and hands Hulk the victory. Later, a recording of Natasha on the Quinjet turns Hulk back into Bruce Banner for the first time since Sokovia. Banner, Valkyrie and Loki agree to escape with Thor. The gladiators, led by Korg and Miek, revolt. Loki tries to betray his brother again, but Thor saw it coming and leaves him behind.
Thor, Banner and Valkyrie fly through a wormhole to Asgard, where Heimdall is defending the people on the bridge. Hulk fights Fenris, Loki arrives with the gladiators' ship, and a remorseful Skurge dies protecting the Asgardians. Fighting Hela, Thor loses his right eye and has a vision of Odin: his thunder never came from the hammer. Even so, Hela is too strong. Thor realizes Asgard is its people, not a place, and sends Loki to put Surtur's crown in the Eternal Flame. Surtur is reborn, destroys Asgard and takes Hela with it. On the Grandmaster's ship, Thor becomes king, makes peace with Loki and sets a course for Earth. In the mid-credits scene, a huge ship looms in front of them. What happens next is left open.
