After the collapse in The Defenders, Matt Murdock is found half dead and taken to the orphanage where he grew up, in the care of Father Lantom and Sister Maggie. His senses are failing, his hearing comes and goes, and his faith is in pieces. Matt decides Matt Murdock is dead. From now on there's only Daredevil, back in the black suit, more violent and more alone. Foggy and Karen think he's gone.
Meanwhile, Wilson Fisk cuts a deal with the FBI. He hands over information on other criminal organizations and, in exchange, leaves prison to serve his sentence under guard in a luxury hotel. Agent Ray Nadeem, buried in debt, bets his career on the deal. But it's all Fisk's plan: he controls the FBI from the inside and wants to get back to Vanessa. To destroy Daredevil's name he uses Agent Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter, a flawless marksman with an unstable mind, who puts on a copy of the red suit and kills in the hero's name.
Matt learns that Sister Maggie is his mother, and the reveal opens another wound. Karen goes after Fisk directly and becomes a target. Dex storms the church looking for her, and Father Lantom dies protecting Karen. A whole episode shows her past in rural Vermont, the death of her brother Kevin and the guilt she carries. Foggy, looking for another way to fight Fisk, runs for district attorney.
Nadeem realizes he's been played and that the FBI is bought. He records a statement laying it all out and is killed on orders from Fisk and Vanessa. Karen releases the video, Daredevil's name is cleared and Fisk is exposed. At Fisk and Vanessa's wedding, Dex and Matt crash the party at the same time. Fisk breaks Dex's spine. Matt beats Fisk but doesn't kill him, and forces a deal: Fisk goes back to prison, and in return Matt keeps quiet about Vanessa's role in Nadeem's death.
In the end, Matt gets to be Matt again, in a suit and with his friends. He, Foggy and Karen plan the firm Nelson, Murdock & Page. Dex undergoes experimental spinal surgery, and the last shot is his eye with a target in it. That comes back later.
