In Pittsburgh in 1999, young Gemma Hall watches her mother, Ingrid, take her own life in the bathroom. Two decades later, Gemma is a single mom to Maya, lives in the house she grew up in and dates Nick, a cop. She starts leaving her body in her sleep and brings a brooch back from the Further. Elise Rainier appears to her there and sends her to Clare, a tattoo artist with the same gift. Gemma learns she's a "courier", able to carry things between the Further and the real world, and that cult leader Cyrus Lam wants to use her to bring the dead back, helped by three elderly neighbors. She also learns her mother had the same gift and died to protect her from Cyrus. Maya inherited it, and Cyrus uses her. Gemma pulls the whole house into the Further, and the dead turn on Cyrus. Mid-credits, he wakes up locked behind a red door.
