Seven years after Buffalo Bill, Clarice takes the blame for a raid gone wrong, and Paul Krendler, who loathes her, wants her badge. Lecter sends a letter of condolence. Mason Verger, who survived Lecter paralyzed and faceless, wants to feed him to wild boars and has Krendler on his side. In Florence, Inspector Pazzi recognizes Lecter and ends up hanging from the Palazzo Vecchio. Lecter returns to the US and is captured, and Clarice frees him but gets drugged. He carries her away, and Margot kills her brother Mason. Lecter treats Clarice with drugs and hypnosis, shows her her father's bones and serves Krendler's brain at dinner. The two become lovers and disappear in Buenos Aires.

ChangeThe ending Scott changed
In the book, Clarice and Lecter become lovers and vanish together, and Barney spots them years later at the opera in Buenos Aires. Ridley Scott didn't buy the character's turn, and Harris let him change it: in the film, Clarice cuffs Lecter, and he gets away alone.
In the book, Mason's sister Margot helps Lecter and kills her brother with his pet moray eel. The film cuts Margot, and Mason's physician, Cordell, is the one who feeds him to the hogs.
In the book, Lecter treats Clarice with drugs and hypnosis and even shows her her father's exhumed skeleton so she can say goodbye. None of that is in the film.
