Tommy Frazer gets a stepmom, a new town, and the huge Bell Valley Middle School. There he meets Thalia and finds the Class of 1947 room, with statues of 25 kids who vanished after their class photo. On the night of the dance, Tommy and his friend Ben take an elevator that moves sideways and drops them in Grayworld, a colorless world. The kids from 1947 are there, sent by the camera of photographer Mr. Chameleon. Classmates who went savage nearly throw the boys into a pit of black goo. Then Thalia steps in: she's the only one who ever escaped. With her lipstick, she opens a way out and sends the boys home. At the end, in the gym, Mr. Chameleon takes their class photo.
